Speech by Serge Cormier, Member of Parliament for Acadie-Bathurst
Coopérative de développement régional Acadie, Caraquet (N.B.)
July 5, 2016, 10:30 a.m.
Thank you very much, Ms [Katherine] Gravel. Ladies and gentlemen, honoured guests, good morning and thank you for being here.
On behalf of my colleague, the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, I am delighted to join you today to deliver good news to the region.
I would like to highlight the important role that the Coopérative de développement régional Acadie (CDR–Acadie) plays in bolstering the local and regional economy by promoting and supporting collective entrepreneurship in the form of cooperatives.
As Member of Parliament for your riding of Acadie–Bathurst, I am encouraged by the innovative vision of agencies like CDR Acadie that help support businesses and ensure prosperity for all.
If we want to continue making the most of our economic success, we need vibrant, forward-looking agencies like CDR-Acadie. They know what needs to be done to foster the development and growth of our business community.
One of the most enjoyable parts of my job is attending events like this one, where the announcements made open up new opportunities for local businesses
You and I both know that strong, resilient communities are the backbone of Atlantic Canada.
That’s why the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, or ACOA, continues to work closely with local communities and business leaders to make strategic investments that build on the competitive advantages offered by municipalities across the region.
As the main economic development agency in Atlantic Canada, ACOA plays a vital role in building a strong, innovative economy in the region and fostering conditions that are conducive to creating quality jobs.
ACOA partners with Atlantic Canadians, empowering them to build a more competitive, technology-oriented economy that is better equipped to leverage global trading opportunities.
The Government of Canada has a plan to deliver the type of real change of which all citizens can be proud. This plan will provide services that Canadians need, create jobs and grow our economy. The Government of Canada is committed to helping Canadian businesses grow, innovate and participate in the global economy so that they can create quality jobs and wealth for all Canadians.
I am pleased to announce that the Government of Canada, through the ACOA Business Development Program, will be investing $150 000 in CDR-Acadie.
Thanks to this investment, CDR-Acadie can move forward with its plan to provide support and guidance to business owners who have expressed an interest in converting their private enterprises into cooperatives.
This project has three components designed to support entrepreneurship:
- Workshop organization and facilitation for owner-managers, members of cooperative interim committees and key stakeholders;
- Activity promotion and coordination; and
- Technical and professional support through workshops and seminars.
Today’s investment will give local SMEs the tools and knowledge they need to make informed decisions concerning the future of their operations. It’s an excellent opportunity for participating SMEs that want to take a cooperative approach to doing business.
I’d like to extend my best wishes and gratitude to Melvin Doiron and his team for their contribution to our region’s prosperity.
I wish you every success. Keep up the good work
